Johannes Medals at Tommy Cochary High School Mile

Johannes Medals at Tommy Cochary High School Mile

Hingham High School senior Caroline Johannes placed third in the prestigious Tommy Cochary Mile on Saturday.  The race featured 10 of the top female milers in the state including 3 State Champions, the national runner-up and 5 girls who had run under 5:07 for the mile, including two who had previously broken the 5:00 barrier.  The race was the final one of a great evening which also featured the high school boy’s event as well as elite men’s and women’s races.
After defending TCHS Champ and national runner-up Grace Connolly broke away from the field Caroline assumed control.  Caroline used a strong surge in the third lap to break open the field with only Sarah Roffman from Littleton going with her.   Roffman used her powerful kick to take 2nd place with Caroline taking a strong third to earn a spot on the podium.  After the race Caroline commented “I was really excited to finish 3rd.  Based on everyone’s best times I was the 6th or 7th fastest and we are all in the middle of cross country training so I didn’t really know what to expect.  I’m really excited to finish on the podium in such a great event”

Caroline Johannes Selected for Prestigious Race

Caroline Johannes (far left above) has been chosen to compete in the prestigious Tommy Cochary High School Mile.  The race is run in memory of Tommy Cochary, a local Falmouth runner who was killed by a drunk driver.  According to the Falmouth Road Race website “The goal of the selection process is to invite the best athletes in Massachusetts who also embody the underlying values of the race and Make Smart Choices in their lives.”
The Hingham XC/Track family is incredibly proud to have one of our own chosen for this amazing race.  Adding to the excitement Boston Marathon Champion Desi Linden will be meeting with the High School athletes and spending time with them!  Please see the press release below about the girl’s event.
Defending champs among those in Cochary High School Mile
Grace Connolly of Natick High School and Mike Griffin of King Philip Regional will return to defend their 2017 titles in the Tommy Cochary High School Mile on August 18 in Falmouth.
The race will be held the day before the New Balance Falmouth Road Race at the James T. Kalperis Track at Falmouth High School.
The participants in the mile run were announced Monday.
The high school mile began in 2010 as part of the Falmouth Road Race weekend and was renamed seven years ago after Tommy Cochary, a Falmouth runner killed in a drunk-driving accident in 1990.
Connolly, whose family summers in Falmouth, broke the meet record last year with a time of 4 minutes, 56.33 seconds, and is coming off a junior season in which she won the 1 mile at the All-State meet and went on to place second at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor mile…
The girls’ mile will also see the return of 2017 entrants Kaitlyn and Sarah Roffman (Littleton), Sarah placing sixth and Kaitlyn 19th at All-State. The field also includes Ashley Foley (Beverly), Sarah Freeman (Central Catholic), Meg Hughes (Old Rochester), Caroline Johannes (Hingham), Sarah Reichheld (Concord-Carlisle), Emily Vivanco (Nashoba Regional) and Gabriella Walsh (Middlesex)….
