Johannes Medals at Tommy Cochary High School Mile

Johannes Medals at Tommy Cochary High School Mile

Hingham High School senior Caroline Johannes placed third in the prestigious Tommy Cochary Mile on Saturday.  The race featured 10 of the top female milers in the state including 3 State Champions, the national runner-up and 5 girls who had run under 5:07 for the mile, including two who had previously broken the 5:00 barrier.  The race was the final one of a great evening which also featured the high school boy’s event as well as elite men’s and women’s races.
After defending TCHS Champ and national runner-up Grace Connolly broke away from the field Caroline assumed control.  Caroline used a strong surge in the third lap to break open the field with only Sarah Roffman from Littleton going with her.   Roffman used her powerful kick to take 2nd place with Caroline taking a strong third to earn a spot on the podium.  After the race Caroline commented “I was really excited to finish 3rd.  Based on everyone’s best times I was the 6th or 7th fastest and we are all in the middle of cross country training so I didn’t really know what to expect.  I’m really excited to finish on the podium in such a great event”

Memorable Athletic Moments - Ellie Holler

The two moments for me that defined my 4 years of Athletics at Hingham High School are as follows:

First, in 2015, I was a sophomore on the Hip Hop Dance Team.  Our team had been through a lot that season; this was the year that the student section turned their backs on us during our breast cancer fundraiser.  We lost
alot of our confidence and didn’t know how we would do going into State Competition, I was nervous about going and nervous about our confidence level and if we would be good enough to compete.   When it was Hingham’s turn to take the floor, we went out there and danced our hearts out for us and no one else. It was time for the awards, we all sat in a circle holding hands, they announced the third place team, not us, then the second place team, also not us... then he announced the first place team  and it was HINGHAM, it was us and my heart dropped, we had just won a state title for the first time in the history of Hingham High’s Dance Team. This was a moment I would never forget!!.

I have been on the Varsity Basketball team here at HHS for 3 years. In the 2016-2017 season, we were a force to be reckoned with. We were undefeated in the Patriot League and ended up winning the Keenan Division Title.  This meant putting a number up on the banner in the gym for the first time since 1999. It is very exciting to look up at the banner in the gym and know that I was part of that team and played a part in making that possible. After the 16-17 season, I was elected to be a Captain for the next season (my senior year). Although we did not have as much success as the previous season, I have a strong love for the game and all of my teammates so it was a great end to my high school basketball career.  I plan to continue to represent my team as I will be playing Division 3 basketball next season at Curry College.

Memorable Athletic Moments - Marshall Terres

During my four years at Hingham High School I have been fortunate enough to be a part of some amazing teams, and have some unforgettable experiences.  My athletic career has been filled with a lot of championship moments such as, scoring a game winning goal in a state championship game in hockey, to snapping a fifteen year drought in lacrosse state championships.  However, these aren’t the feats that I want to remember and cherish for the rest of my life. One lesson I’ve learned over my athletic career is that it is not all about winning championships. It is sometimes about the experience you get to have and the people you do it with.  During my senior year fall, I was able to play my Thanksgiving Eve and final high school football game at Fenway Park. I will never forget this night. We got to use the visiting team’s locker room at Fenway, and walk right out of the dugout onto the field. A mind blowing moment to think about all of the legends that have made that walk before me.  It is moments like catching the opening kick off and getting stains all over my white uniform from the red authentic Fenway dirt. Those are the ones I will really cherish. I will always remember standing at the fifty yard line with my dad, also my coach, after the game and just taking in the moment under the shining lights at Fenway Park. Along with moments like playing at Fenway Park, I have been lucky enough to be a part of some great teams at Hingham High School.  One of the closest teams I’ve ever been a part of was during my senior year hockey season. At the beginning of the year we were returning just seven players with a regular shift and were looking questionable. It was the camaraderie we were able to create that allowed us to accomplish what we did. Hanging out as a team beyond the rink, and always being supportive of the other guys went further than I ever thought possible. After handing Central Catholic only their second loss of the season, we finished in the semi-finals.  Finishing that season in the Super 8 semi-final at the Tsongas Center after a tough loss was one of the hardest, proudest moments of my life. To realize I was a part of the best public school team in the state, where no one individual stood out, where everyone played for the guy next to him, and where we all grew up playing together, was a far better feeling than any individual moment I’ve ever been a part of. Thank you to all the teams I have been a part of at Hingham High School for all the lasting memories!

Hingham Pole Vault Team Excels at the DII State Relays

The Girls Pole Vault A team relay of Isabelle Gay, Lila Belsher, and Peyton Belsher jumped a combined height of 24'6" breaking their own school pole vault relay record.  This placed them 3rd at the State Relay Championships.  The Pole Vault B team of Alexandra Gay, Alexandra Colby, and Maja Nielsen placed 4th.   Maja Nielsen, out of our B team, broke our school pole vault record with her jump of 9'6".  This was a 2'6" improvement on her best from last year and added 6" to our previous school record.  This gives the girls track team 10 points going into the remainder of the State Relay Championships event held on Sunday in Walpole.

This is Hingham's second year with a pole vault facility.  The record has been held by 3 athletes on our current team (Peyton Belsher, Isabelle Gay, and now Maja Nielsen).

Last year Maja did not get to compete at State Relays because our B team request was rejected.  We were very happy to prove that both the A and B team deserved to be there.  Having an athlete on the B relay break a school record with a 2'6" personal improvement isn't something you plan for.  The girls were all very proud of her.    The team is also very excited to have 10 points already going into the remaining events at the State Relay Championships on Sunday.

“I am excited to announce Jim Connor as our next head football coach and welcome him to the Hingham school community,” said Quatromoni.  “Jim is an established presence among football coaches in eastern Massachusetts.  The success that he has enjoyed as a head coach, first at North Quincy, and more recently in Norwell, speaks to his knowledge of the game and ability to inspire high achievement in student-athletes.  I trust him to build upon the strong foundation that exists here, and to advance the culture of Harbormen Football.”
